Medvedev to head the editorial board of new social studies textbooks

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has been appointed chief editor of a new series of school social studies textbooks for grades 9–11. According to Deputy Minister of Education Olga Koludarova, he agreed to oversee the project at the ministry’s request, and his edits were incorporated not only into the final versions of the textbooks but also into updated educational standards.

Last year, journalists conducted a detailed review of a 9th-grade social studies textbook prepared under the supervision of Vladimir Medinsky. They found numerous references to Putin, controversial interpretations of history — including the denial of the USSR’s totalitarian nature — and even described Immanuel Kant as a “Russian philosopher.”

The textbook also included promotional inserts about contract military service, information on benefits for participants in the war in Ukraine, and quotes from Domostroi as an example of a “traditional family order.”
